Mice are real omnivores

mouseMice have a very easy dietary pattern, as they are naturally opportunistic omnivores. This means that they should also be provided with small amounts of animal proteins. A good menu for mice consists of a varied selection of seeds, grains and vegetables, supplemented with vitamin chunks.

Make sure they eat everything, so they actually ingest all the nutrients. Do make sure that food is always available, however, as their fast metabolism means they will soon need new nutrients and energy. Provide fresh drinking water every day too.

Are you already familiar with breeding mice?

mouse babyWhen you consciously decide to breed, always make sure you have plenty of new homes for the young. Only breed healthy animals with a good character. Wait until the female is a few months old and then place her in a cage that is unfamiliar to her together with the male (this can be the male's cage).

The gestation period is about three weeks. At the end of this time, give the female some extra nesting material. If she is kept with other females, they will help to look after the young. The 8 to 14 young are born bald, blind and deaf, developing to independent mice in five weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Can my mice survive for a day without food?

No, that would be dangerous! Mice have a very fast metabolism, so they need continuous intakes of new feed.

Can I give my mice snacks?

Of course, but ideally give them small snacks alongside their main feed. Witte Molen has a broad range of delicious natural treats for rodents. You can also give them an additional small piece of vegetable or fruit once in a while, but don’t give them too much at once as they’re only tiny!
